Today, the third Monday in January has acquired the title of Blue Monday. It’s meant to be the most depressing day of the year and whether that’s true or not January is a dreary time of the year. No Christmas to look forward to, dark afternoons and even darker mornings and Summer still seems a very long way off.
You’re probably wondering where I’m going with this. As someone who works from home, I spend a lot of time by myself, so I find it especially important to get out and about. My preferred solution for this is running.
January fitness kick
I have been running on and off for a long time and have completed half marathons and 10k’s but had fallen out of love with it until around this time last year.
January is a popular time to start a fitness drive and to be honest I was no different, I wanted to lose a bit of weight and get fit. I downloaded the 5K runner app, (there are lots available on the App Store and most of them are free) and got started. These programmes are perfect for beginners as if you stick to them you will be able to run the 5K at the end. They usually last around six weeks.
Banish the January blues
I find running the perfect way to clear my head and at the end of it you feel really good and you can build up to bigger distances. A year on and I have stuck to my plan and run around five miles every other day often with my dog, Lola. You don’t have to go as far or as often but make a start and you will quickly see a difference both mentally and physically.
You’re also not restricted on where you can run so you can even build it into your schedule while you’re on holiday. I can’t recommend it highly enough and what’s even better, apart from apparel and shoes, it’s free so what’s not to love? Go on give it a go and banish those blues away!
